My impressions of driving Sea Dragon. It took no time at all to get accustomed to the hand controls although I did miss the foot pedal I have on my craft for thrust. My first drive of UH19P Sea Dragon was exciting because the front of the craft is very low compared to mine and initially gives the impression of ploughing-in, any concerns soon departed as there was no detectable tendency to do this. It is easy to over presurise the bag skirt because the lift fan generates more than enough pressure so I found that I could reduce the pressure and the craft performance improved having less bounce and a smoother ride over water and sand bars. Side ways travel is a breeze, I found no tendency to drop the side in a turn because the full bag skirt is among the most stable of skirt systems. Thrust power is extraordinary and there is a tendency to want to go faster and faster when you have so much thrust. I took club members and their families for rides across the waters and sand flats of Port Albert during Sunday morning. Sea Dragon seats 4 adults in relative comfort and from the comments, everyone really enjoyed themselves. Body language is not relevant in a craft of this size and design, it doesn't matter who sits where, the craft is well balanced sideways and fore and aft. To my amazement, the craft has so much thrust that I could drive it all the way up the very long and steep boat ramp to George's trailer in the car park from almost a standing start in the water at the bottom of the ramp.
Additional Technical Information: Universal Hovercraft design UH19P Fibreglass construction, with 2000 lbs of buoyancy , cleaning hatches and drain plugs are fitted. The hull and cabin are white and all external trim is black. Weight 715 Kgs with 100 Ltr of fuel. Steering: 3 Rudders controlled by cable and steering wheel. Trim Wing (elevator) is cable controlled by a lever in the cabin. Lift Fan: 4 blade constant chord wooden fan designed by Universal to suit the UH series of hovercraft. Skirt System: Full Bag, pressured by the tips of the Lift fan Fuel tanks are located under the seats with spare tanks positioned outside the cabin. The Cabin The seats and cabin are upholstered in quality waterproof materials (blue-grey) and are very comfortable. The cabin roof is made of weatherproof marine tarpaulin material on a very strong demountable pipe frame, the sides roll up and down, with strong marine quality zips to fasten them when not in use. It is a bit of a squeeze getting into and out of the cabin but once everyone is seated you immediately have the feeling of security and comfort. There is some spray from the skirts but due to the design and position of the cabin everyone stayed dry. Instrumentation, lights etc: Tachometers, temp, battery charge, itemised fuse panel, electric wind screen wipers, separate lift and thrust off switches, navigation lights, riding lights, full beam driving lights for night use, safety glass wind screen.
Very well manufactured dual axle, wind-up-tilt trailer with demountable rear ramp for drive on drive off capability, the sides of the trailer are removable for easy access to the skirt while on the trailer. George designed and built this trailer to suit the Sea Dragon. The trailer and craft tow well on the highway with no tendency to jerk or sway. It is a different experience between driving a Turbo sized hovercraft and a 6 metre or longer craft, reaction time and controlling a craft of this size is strange at first but when one becomes accustomed to it there is a feeling that comes with driving bigger craft that is pure pleasure, everything is smoother and you feel that you can go on exploring for ever particularly if you have friends or family with you. Sea Dragon is well-tuned and exhibited no vices or bad tendencies, while the steering is firm, control is quite precise and easy to anticipate. George's hovercraft is quite impressive and turns heads wherever it goes. I can recommend it as an excellent touring craft eMail Hovergo SG for more information
